Using Encryption with Mail Print

  • 1

This article describes the use of SSL certificates with mail to provide encrypted connections to our mail servers. There are two types of encryption available, STARTTLS and TLS/SSL.

STARTTLS is the more commonly used method.

Using STARTTLS connection to your mail server:

If you set your mail client to use a STARTTLS (Encrypted) conenction to access and send mail via the mail server using mail.YOUR-DOMAIN.NAME, then you will receive a Certificate Warning.

This is to warn you that the certificate issued by the server does not match mail.YOUR-DOMAIN.NAME.
If you wish to examine the certificate you will see it is a signed certificate for a domain like trinity.myhost.ie or ppmail05.myhost.ie etc

You can safely accept this certificate for the connection to encrypt connections to and from the mail server.
Note, you will have to accept the certificate for incoming and outgoing connections, it should appear as a pop-up the first time you send and receive an e-mail.

STARTTLS connections use the following settings:

Username: YOUR FULL EMAIL ADDRESS
Password: **********

Incoming mail server: SERVER.MYHOST.IE
Encrypted Password
STARTTLS enabled
POP Port: 110
or
IMAP Port: 143

Outgoing mail server: SERVER.MYHOST.IE
Encrypted Password
STARTTLS enabled
Port: 587
*Uses Authentication
*Same logins as Incoming.

If you wish to avoid receiving the certificate warning, please contact us at support@myhost.ie to request the hostname for your domains mail server to be used instead of mail.YOUR-DOMAIN.NAME.

USING TLS/SSL connection to your mail server:

To use a TLS/SSL connection to the mail server you will need to know the hostname of the mail server. Please contact us at support@myhost.ie to request the hostname for your domains mail server to be used instead of mail.YOUR-DOMAIN.NAME.

Username: YOUR FULL EMAIL ADDRESS
Password: **********

Incoming mail server: SERVER.MYHOST.IE
Encrypted Password
TLS/SSL
POP Port: 995
or
IMAP Port: 993

Outgoing mail server: SERVER.MYHOST.IE
Encrypted Password
TLS/SSL
Port: 465
*Uses Authentication
*Same logins as Incoming.

*These settings are important and usually located in the Advanced or More Settings section of the mail client for your outgoing mail server.

Note that TLS/SSL connections use different ports on the server as detailed above.

Webmail is available at http://webmail.YOUR-DOMAIN.NAME
